Carla Vasavada: Right, exactly. My favorite film genre is horror. If you put all your faith into a horror film, you’re going to make it, but it has to connect on many levels. You have to have the right tone, because no one wants to watch a horror movie. No one wants to feel afraid. There’s still so much we can add to that genre of scary storytelling. It’s important for horror to bring those emotions out into the real world.

The title and design of The Revenant was inspired by one of the movies that inspired our director, Francis Ford Coppola. The movie that inspired the title was A Few Good Men. Francis directed it and I had to look up all the scenes because it had so much action. We put a lot of effort into trying to capture that same kind of action.

Kirill Kleymenov: I have never seen A Few Good Men, so I thought it was beautiful.

Kirill Kleymenov: The name of the movie was based on a line from an actor’s role in The Shawshank Redemption. It’s very personal, and we have a lot of fun with the name. There was a scene with John Turturro as Willie the Tracker and David Thewlis as the man in the black hat, and Willie the Tracker has something hidden in the pocket of his clothes. In that scene I found the phrase “In The Shadows of Tomorrow” that was in the script. Everything we needed to look this way, this is why we decided to name this movie The Revenant.

The Revenant has a wonderful story, and the best way to convey what it’s like to be in that environment is to get back to basics, like a movie like A Few Good Men, and see how that experience played out on screen.

Kirill Kleymenov: When we were watching those movies we were like, “OK, this movie is like that movie? What are they going to call this movie?” That was one of the things we were searching for after looking at the landscape of horror films. It’s so fun to follow the story line, and we’re also trying to tell other stories that might not have come from the mind of the movie.

The biggest challenge in The Revenant was figuring out how to create this naturalistic feel. We had to go back and look at the history
